Assessment of Probiotic Translocation Potential

In terms of possible toxicity due to translocation, there is no evidence that probiotics have more undesirable properties than clinical isolates. However, the possible risk of translocation of probiotics cannot be ruled out. Creative Enzymes uses our science to research the possibility of translocation of strains of bacteria by making experimental animals ingest probiotics. We are committed to addressing concerns about the potential for strain translocation in our clients' probiotic products by providing them with reliable testing.

Translocation of Probiotics

Some reports of adverse reactions to probiotic translocation have raised concerns. For example, probiotics may transfer to the blood and other internal organs leading to rare complications such as bacteremia, fungemia, sepsis and multi-organ failure. Bacterial translocation to the liver, spleen, and kidney, except blood were also observed on intraperitoneal injection of Lactobacillus salivarius REN. Intraperitoneal administration of the probiotic strain Lactobacillus directly has been observed to favor probiotic translocation, although no disease or death due to bacterial translocation has been observed. Therefore, the potential risk of translocation and infection of probiotics warrants further study through animal models.

Probiotic Translocation Potential Assessment Services We Provide

To further substantiate the issue of probiotic safety, Creative Enzymes' scientific team has leveraged our extensive expertise to provide a systematic approach to assessing the potential for probiotic translocation. In the laboratory of creative enzymes, our experimenters try to check the translocation ability of probiotics by choosing the appropriate route of administration, including oral high doses of probiotics or intraperitoneal administration. The translocation ability of the donor strains and the potential adverse effects they may cause were characterized by observing translocation in blood, liver, spleen, kidney, mesenteric lymph nodes, and the presence of epithelial cells and mucosal layer disorders in ileum, cecum, and colon.

Testing Process of Creative Enzymes

Creative Enzymes is committed to providing our clients with high quality test results using our standardized testing process. The following describes the general process we use to assess the risk of probiotic translocation.

  • The experimental animals were grouped and placed in a suitable culture environment for acclimatization for 7 days.
  • Select the appropriate route of administration. The animals in the experimental and control groups were administered once a day for 7 consecutive days. The general signs of the subject animals were observed daily and body weight was measured.
  • On the eighth day which was one day after the final administration, all mice were sacrificed after blood was collected from the heart under anesthesia.
  • After grossly observing all organs and tissues for abnormalities, liver, spleen, kidney, ileum, cecum, colon and mesenteric lymph nodes were collected under biological clean conditions for bacterial translocation analysis and histopathological examination.
